Performance:
The wide range of engines includes 113bhp 1.6 and 2.0 petrols and 1.6- and 2.0-litre turbodiesels. These are keen to rev and provide decent acceleration, the diesels especially. However, the optional CVT auto gearbox can sap the smallest diesel’s performance. There are also 79bhp 1.4, 99bhp 1.6 and 122bhp 1.8 petrols, plus a 113bhp 1.8 turbodiesel.
Ride & handling:
Sports suspension is standard on Zetec Climate spec cars and an option on Titanium models, but this gives the Focus an overly firm low-speed ride. The regular set-up is much better at dealing with battered surfaces, plus it still provides fine body control. The steering is accurate and informative.
Refinement:
All engines are quiet and smooth, even when worked hard. The diesels betray themselves with a small murmur, but are still among the best in the class. Wind noise is effectively sealed out, too. However, road noise varies dramatically depending on the wheels, tyres and suspension fitted, and even in the quietest examples it remains a problem.
Behind the wheel:
The Focus dash may look a little dull, but the controls and instruments are a model of clarity. The driver’s seat can be cranked up and down using a simple ratchet lever, plus it’s combined with two-way steering adjustment so people of all shapes and sizes can get comfortable. Slim rear pillars mean over-the-shoulder vision is excellent, too.
Space & practicality:
Any worries about the steeply sloping rear roofline of the Focus are not borne out when sitting in the back seat. Instead, there’s good headroom and an airy feel to the rear of the cabin. The boot is generous and a practical, rectangular shape with no irritating intrusions from the wheelarches.
Equipment:
All models come with electric front windows, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and 60/40 split rear seats. LX and Ghia trims aim to give greater comfort while Zetec, Sport and Titanium cars are intended for those wanting a more sporty feel. Only the entry Studio spec looks stingy, missing out on remote locking, a CD player and air-conditioning.
